Meaning: Nasya is highly beneficial for all sense organs and especially effective in treating diseases of the head.
In Ayurveda, the nose is called the "doorway to the head" (Shiro-dwara). Through Nasya, medicated oils, ghee, powders, or herbal juices are administered through the nasal passages.
It is one of the five main Panchkarma therapies, primarily used for cleansing and nourishing the head, brain, and sensory organs. Nasya not only improves respiratory and neurological functions but also has a deep impact on mental clarity, emotional balance, and vitality.
Nasya exploits the intranasal route, which modern research shows can deliver drugs directly to CNS structures via olfactory and trigeminal pathways. Nasal instillations influence local mucosal immunity, clear sinus inflammation, and can rapidly modify brain-targeted signalling (neurotrophins, neurotransmitters) in preclinical models. Intranasal therapies are being investigated for mood, neurodegeneration and acute CNS delivery; Nasya's observed clinical benefits in cognition, sleep, and sinus disease are consistent with improved nasal mucosal function, reduced pro-inflammatory cytokines and possible direct nose-to-brain transport of active phytoconstituents.
Ayurveda classifies Nasya therapy into different types based on purpose:
