Snehan (Oleation Therapy) in Ayurveda
A Vital Step of Panchkarma
“स्नेहो हि शरीरस्य श्रेयान् स्निग्धं चाङ्गमर्दनम्। स्नेहं विना तु न शक्यं शरीरं धारयितुम्॥” (चरक संहिता, सूत्रस्थान)
Meaning: Just as the body cannot function without adequate lubrication, Sneha (unctuousness) is essential to maintain health, flexibility, and proper functioning of all tissues.
Snehan, also called Oleation Therapy, is one of the most significant preparatory procedures in Panchkarma – the detoxification and rejuvenation protocol of Ayurveda. The word Sneha means oil, unctuousness, love, and nourishment. True to its name, Snehan works on the principle of softening, lubricating, and nourishing the body inside out. It prepares the body to expel accumulated toxins (Ama) while also rejuvenating tissues.
Snehan can be performed internally by ingesting medicated ghee/oils (Snehapan) or externally through massage (Abhyanga). Both forms play a crucial role in mobilizing deep-seated toxins toward the gastrointestinal tract, from where they can be eliminated through Panchkarma therapies.
Snehan (Oleation / Abhyanga) — Modern Scientific View
Oil massage (Abhyanga) stimulates skin mechanoreceptors and large-fibre afferents, shifting autonomic balance toward parasympathetic dominance — lowering heart rate, perceived stress and cortisol while improving sleep and relaxation. The mechanical action plus warm oil increases local blood and lymph flow, helps clear inflammatory mediators from tissues, and improves skin barrier and hydration. Oral oleation (medicated ghee) may modify gut lipid handling and the microbiome, indirectly affecting metabolic hormones (leptin, adiponectin) and systemic inflammation. Small clinical pilots of Abhyanga show reduced subjective stress and favorable cardio-autonomic shifts, supporting these mechanisms.
Types of Snehan Therapy
Ayurveda classifies Snehan into two broad categories:
- Internal Oleation (Abhyantar Snehan / Snehapanam)
- Involves oral intake of medicated ghee, oil, or fat-based formulations.
- Helps loosen toxins and balance doshas internally.
- Commonly used substances:
- Goghrita (cow’s ghee) – pacifies Pitta and nourishes tissues.
- Tila taila (sesame oil) – balances Vata, strengthens nerves.
- Mahamasha taila, Kalyanaka ghrita, Triphala ghrita – for specific conditions.
- External Oleation (Bahya Snehan)
- Application of medicated oils, ghee, or fats on the body.
- Most common form: Abhyanga (Ayurvedic oil massage).
- Other forms include:
- Mardana – deep tissue massage.
- Pichu – oil-soaked cotton kept on the affected part.
- Parisheka – pouring warm oil continuously over the body.
- Karna Purana – oil instilled in the ears.
- Shirodhara – rhythmic pouring of oil on the forehead.
Protective Role of Snehan
Apart from mobilizing toxins, Snehan plays a protective role:
- Safeguards tissues – lubricates joints, strengthens muscles, nourishes skin.
- Protects the body from wear and tear – acts as a buffer against stress and degeneration.
- Prevents dryness and depletion – maintains the balance of Vata dosha.
- Improves immunity – by enriching Ojas (vital essence of life).
Duration of Snehan Therapy
The duration varies according to the condition, dosha imbalance, and body strength.
- Internal Oleation is generally given for 3–7 days with gradually increasing doses until signs of proper oleation appear (softness of skin, oily stools, feeling of lightness).
- External Oleation (Abhyanga) can be practiced daily as a lifestyle routine, or in Panchkarma, usually for 7–14 days along with Swedana (sudation therapy).
- Short-term sessions (30–60 minutes) are given for relaxation and preventive healthcare.
