Meaning: Just as the body cannot function without adequate lubrication, Sneha (unctuousness) is essential to maintain health, flexibility, and proper functioning of all tissues.
Snehan, also called Oleation Therapy, is one of the most significant preparatory procedures in Panchkarma – the detoxification and rejuvenation protocol of Ayurveda. The word Sneha means oil, unctuousness, love, and nourishment. True to its name, Snehan works on the principle of softening, lubricating, and nourishing the body inside out. It prepares the body to expel accumulated toxins (Ama) while also rejuvenating tissues.
Snehan can be performed internally by ingesting medicated ghee/oils (Snehapan) or externally through massage (Abhyanga). Both forms play a crucial role in mobilising deep-seated toxins toward the gastrointestinal tract, from where they can be eliminated through Panchkarma therapies.
Oil massage (Abhyanga) stimulates skin mechanoreceptors and large-fibre afferents, shifting autonomic balance toward parasympathetic dominance — lowering heart rate, perceived stress and cortisol while improving sleep and relaxation. The mechanical action plus warm oil increases local blood and lymph flow, helps clear inflammatory mediators from tissues, and improves skin barrier and hydration. Oral oleation (medicated ghee) may modify gut lipid handling and the microbiome, indirectly affecting metabolic hormones (leptin, adiponectin) and systemic inflammation. Small clinical pilots of Abhyanga show reduced subjective stress and favourable cardio-autonomic shifts, supporting these mechanisms.
Ayurveda classifies Snehan into two broad categories:
Involves oral intake of medicated ghee, oil, or fat-based formulations.
Application of medicated oils, ghee, or fats on the body.
Beyond the general classifications, Ayurveda offers targeted oleation therapies designed to address specific health concerns and body regions:
Akshi Tarpan is a deeply nourishing Ayurvedic therapy dedicated to preserving the strength and longevity of the eyes. In this procedure, warm medicated ghee is gently retained over the eyes within a boundary of herbal dough. The therapy soothes dryness, burning, and irritation caused by excessive screen time, heat, or pollution. It rejuvenates the optic nerves, enhances vision, and balances Pitta dosha responsible for ocular strain. Regular Akshi Tarpan helps prevent premature eye fatigue, dryness, and degeneration while promoting clarity, coolness, and natural lustre of the eyes.
Kawal Dharan is an Ayurvedic oral detox and strengthening therapy where medicated oil or herbal decoction is gently swished and held in the mouth. This practice helps remove oral toxins, strengthens gums, teeth, and jaw muscles, and refreshes the voice and taste senses. It also improves digestion by stimulating salivary enzymes. Regular Kawal Dharan prevents bad breath, dryness, and mouth ulcers, while promoting oral hygiene, facial glow, and overall head-neck vitality. A gentle daily ritual for holistic oral and systemic well-being.
Shiro Abhyanga is a traditional Ayurvedic head massage using warm herbal oils that deeply nourish the scalp, strengthen hair roots, and calm the nervous system. The rhythmic strokes enhance blood circulation, relieve stress, and balance Vata dosha responsible for tension and dryness. It helps prevent headaches, hair fall, and premature greying, while improving memory and sleep quality. Regular Shiro Abhyanga induces a sense of tranquillity and rejuvenation, harmonising the mind and body through the crown energy centre.
Paad Abhyanga is a deeply grounding Ayurvedic therapy involving the gentle massage of the feet with warm medicated oils. It revitalises tired soles, improves circulation, and soothes the nerves that connect the feet to vital organs. The therapy calms Vata, relieves stress, and promotes restful sleep. Regular Paad Abhyanga nourishes skin, strengthens joints, enhances eyesight, and restores overall balance. It is particularly beneficial for those who spend long hours standing, travelling, or using digital devices — a true therapy of relaxation and renewal.
Karna Puran involves gently filling the ears with warm medicated oil to lubricate and nourish the delicate auditory channels. This therapy helps reduce earache, ringing, dryness, and itching while improving hearing clarity. It balances Vata dosha in the head region, relieves stiffness of the neck and jaw, and promotes deep mental calmness. Regular Karna Puran protects the ears from infections and environmental stressors, while enhancing sensory balance and grounding the nervous system. A soothing ritual for both sensory and mental well-being. Karna Puran helps with the pain of trigeminal neuralgia greatly.
Nabhi Prasek is a gentle Ayurvedic practice where warm herbal oil is applied to and massaged around the navel region — the body's central energy point. It enhances digestion, balances hormones, and relieves abdominal bloating and dryness. The therapy nurtures the connection between gut and mind, supporting emotional balance and vitality. Nabhi Prasek also helps hydrate internal tissues and promotes smoother skin. Rooted in Ayurvedic wisdom, this simple yet profound therapy restores balance to the body's core, aligning physical and emotional wellness.
Apart from mobilising toxins, Snehan plays a protective role:
