How to Beat the Winter Blues — The Ayurvedic Way

by Aas Ayurveda 12 Dec 2025 1 comment

Winters bring vibrant hues and festive warmth. Colourful sweaters, blooming flowers like Petunias, Chrysanthemums, and Delphiniums, and the aroma of homemade sweets—Panjiri, Atta laddus, and Gaund laddus—make this season truly delightful.

But while winter charms our senses, it also brings along challenges like cold, cough, sinusitis, breathing issues, joint pain, and fatigue—especially for those with weaker immunity.

Why We Feel Low in Winter

In today’s lifestyle, we rarely prepare our bodies for seasonal shifts. Right after Diwali, excess consumption of sweets increases ‘Kapha dosha’, resulting in mucus, heaviness, and sluggishness.

According to Ayurveda, the Madhur (sweet) rasa provides warmth and energy during cold months, but overindulgence—especially in fermented, processed, or frozen sweets like pastries and breads—disturbs the doshic balance.

The secret lies in moderation and using antidotes that balance Kapha and Vata while nourishing the body.

Winter Diet Guide (Ahara)

Meals to Take:

Warm, unctuous meals cooked in desi ghee or sesame oil.

Homemade sweets like panjiri and laddus with black pepper and methi for better digestion.

Warm water is sipped throughout the day to aid metabolism and hydration.

Meals to Avoid:

Kapha-forming foods: Curd, banana, taro, brinjal, peas, and excessive potatoes.

Vata-aggravating foods (especially for joint pain): Avoid reheated Saag, Kadhi, Rajma, and Chole.

Junk & processed foods: Lasagna, mayonnaise-based meals, and refined oils.

Winter Lifestyle (Vihara)

What to Follow:

Dress in natural woollens, not synthetics; cover extremities to prevent skin dryness.

Maintain a comfortable room temperature; avoid overheating that causes dehydration.

Practice Abhyanga (oil massage) with medicated oils followed by Swedana (steam therapy) to balance Vata and keep the body supple.

What to Avoid:

Daytime sleeping (it aggravates Kapha); instead, sunbathe during the afternoon.

Avoid direct exposure to cold air and sitting too close to heaters or charcoal fires.

The Role of Panchkarma & Ayurvedic Therapies in Winter Wellness

Winter often brings not only physical stiffness but also emotional dullness or low mood, sometimes known as seasonal affective disorder (SAD) or winter depression.
Ayurveda offers holistic healing through Panchkarma therapies—such as Abhyanga (therapeutic oil massage), Swedana (herbal steam therapy), Basti (medicated enema), and Nasya (nasal therapy)—that help cleanse toxins, balance aggravated Vata and Kapha, improve circulation, and deeply rejuvenate the mind and body.

For those struggling with chronic pain, anxiety, or sleeplessness, these therapies act as natural stabilisers for the nervous system. The warmth and oil-based therapies nourish the tissues (dhatus), improve mood, and boost endorphin-like responses.

Ayurvedic formulations and modern-standardised medicines, including medicinal cannabis (under professional Ayurvedic supervision), have shown remarkable effects in relieving joint pain, muscle stiffness, anxiety, and depressive symptoms. When used in prescribed doses, it supports neurotransmitter balance, reduces inflammation, and promotes calmness without dependency—offering a safe, plant-based solution to overcome the winter blues.

Home Remedies & Immunity Boosters

Immunity is your body’s armour—strong immunity is built gradually through diet, discipline, and daily care.

Ayurvedic Recommendations:

Chyawanprash: A time-tested elixir for winter wellness; rejuvenates and strengthens immunity.

Nasya therapy: Applying medicated oil drops in the nose helps with sinusitis, headaches, and respiratory issues.

Kitchen anti-allergy remedy: Suck on one clove, one cardamom, and one black pepper for instant relief from allergies and congestion.

Spices to favour: Tulsi, turmeric, cinnamon, and garlic for warmth and immunity.

Use Ashwagandha and Giloy only under Ayurvedic guidance as per your Prakriti (body type).
