Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Chronic fatigue syndrome is a disorder characterized by extreme fatigue that is difficult to be explained by any underlying medical condition. It may worsen with physical and mental activity and doesn’t relieve with rest. The cause of chronic fatigue syndrome is not known, but it is being attributed to various factors like viral infections to physical or psychological stress. It alters the quality of life in individuals suffering from it.
Ayurvedic Description of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Ayurveda attributes Chronic Fatigue Syndrome to aggravated Vata dosha. The aggravated Vata generates negative effects at the physical and mental level, feeling of intense fatigue, muscle cramps, and pains are the signs of aggravated Vata dosha, as also are a weakness of the nervous system, disturbed sleep patterns, mental fogginess, and forgetfulness.

- Severe fatigue
- Lack of interest in daily tasks
- Confusion, inability to take decisions, etc.
Causes and Risk Factors
1. Age- Chronic fatigue syndrome is more reported in the age group of 40 to 59 years, however, it can happen at any age.
2. Lifestyle- Adopting a poor lifestyle, consumption of excessive liquor and smoking, and taking too much stress off the issues that are not under one’s control can lead to CFS.
3. Sex- More women are diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome than men, 60 to 85% of cases have been reported by women; however, indications suggest that the prevalence among men is underreported.
4. Stress- Difficulty managing stress may contribute to the development of chronic fatigue syndrome.
5. Nutritional deficiency- Deficiency of Vit D3, Vit B12, Vit C, and Iron deficiencies may also contribute to developing the condition of CFS.
Self Care Tips
- Add an adequate quantity of milk, pure ghee, and milk products to meals.
- Eat fresh fruits like bananas and melons, and dry fruits like dates and walnuts, which reduce aggravated Vata.
- Body massage, yoga, pranayama, and meditation also help in reigning over aggravated Vata and combat fatigue.
- Develop a physical workout plan to avoid or limit overexertion and emotional stress. Allow yourself some time each day to relax and appreciate the good things in life.
- Go to bed and get up at the same time each day. Limit daytime napping and avoid caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine.
